Hi, You use your board like a rudder(like a sailboat does) to go upwind. When learning you spend a bit of time walking upwind untill you master the board skills.

Steve, you mind me asking if you have to walk back on the beach after you run for a while. I mean, what if the wind is only oging in one direction.
